Alive and Well in Pakistan: A Human Journey in Dangerous Times
In 1993, Greg Mortenson, a former mountaineer, embarked on a journey that would change his life forever. He had set out to climb K2, the world's second-highest mountain, but a storm forced him to abandon his attempt. As he was making his way back down the mountain, he stumbled upon a small village where he was taken in by a local family. The villagers were desperately poor, and their children had no access to education. Mortenson was deeply moved by their plight, and he promised to return and build a school for them.

Mortenson kept his promise. He returned to the village the following year with a team of volunteers and began construction on the school. The project was not without its challenges. The Taliban, which was in control of the area at the time, was suspicious of Mortenson's intentions. They threatened him and his team, and they even burned down the school. But Mortenson refused to give up. He knew that the children of the village deserved a chance to learn, and he was determined to make sure that they had that opportunity.
Mortenson's work in Pakistan has made a real difference in the lives of countless children. He has established over 150 schools in some of the most remote and dangerous regions of the country. These schools provide children with a safe place to learn and grow, and they are helping to break the cycle of poverty and extremism. Mortenson's story is an inspiring example of how one person can make a difference in the world.
A Conversation with Greg Mortenson
In a recent interview, Greg Mortenson talked about his experiences in Pakistan and the importance of education.
"I've seen firsthand the power of education to transform lives," Mortenson said. "Education gives children the knowledge and skills they need to improve their own lives and the lives of their families and communities. It's the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and extremism."
Mortenson also spoke about the challenges of working in Pakistan.
"Pakistan is a complex and dangerous country," he said. "There are many challenges to working there, but the biggest challenge is the threat of violence. The Taliban and other extremist groups are constantly targeting schools and teachers. But we cannot let them win. We must continue to build schools and provide children with the opportunity to learn."
