Excerpt from Shot Down and On the Run
I remember the moment I was shot down like it was yesterday. I was flying a P-47 Thunderbolt over Normandy when I was hit by a flak burst. My plane went into a spin, and I knew I was going down. I ejected from the cockpit and parachuted to the ground. I landed in a field near a small village. As I looked around, I realized that I was in Nazi-occupied France.
I knew that I had to get out of there as quickly as possible. I didn't speak French, and I didn't know anyone in the area. But I was determined to survive. I found a barn to hide in, and I spent the next few days trying to figure out what to do.
One day, I was walking through the woods when I came across a group of French Resistance fighters. They were armed and dangerous, but they were also kind and welcoming. They took me in and gave me food and shelter. They also told me about their plans to fight against the Germans. I was inspired by their courage, and I decided to join them.
For the next two years, I fought alongside the French Resistance. We carried out daring missions against the Germans, and we helped to liberate France from Nazi occupation. It was a dangerous and difficult time, but it was also one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
I learned a lot about myself during those two years. I learned that I was stronger and more resilient than I ever thought possible. I also learned the importance of courage, camaraderie, and sacrifice. I am forever grateful to the French Resistance fighters who saved my life and gave me the opportunity to fight for freedom.
