In his new book, First, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Evan Thomas tells the story of O'Connor's life and career. Thomas draws on interviews with O'Connor herself, as well as her family, friends, and colleagues, to create a portrait of a complex and fascinating woman.
O'Connor was born in El Paso, Texas, in 1930. Her father was a rancher, and her mother was a schoolteacher. O'Connor attended Stanford University, where she met her husband, John. After graduating from law school, she worked as a lawyer in Phoenix, Arizona.
In 1981, President Ronald Reagan nominated O'Connor to the Supreme Court. She was confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 99-0. O'Connor quickly became one of the most influential justices on the Court. She was known for her ability to build consensus and find common ground between the Court's liberal and conservative wings.
O'Connor retired from the Court in 2006. She has since written two books and taught law at the University of Arizona. She is now 91 years old and lives in Phoenix with her husband.
First is a must-read for anyone interested in American history, the Supreme Court, or the life of a truly extraordinary woman. Evan Thomas has written a masterful biography that is both informative and inspiring.
