John Dee, the Elizabethan magus, mathematician, and astrologer, was one of the most influential figures in the history of Western esotericism. His work on astrology, alchemy, and the Kabbalah laid the foundation for much of the modern occult tradition. In this book, historian and author Peter Marshall explores Dee's life and work, and the role that he played in the development of the occult sciences.

Dee was born in London in 1527. He was a precocious child, and by the age of 15 he had mastered Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. He went on to study at Cambridge University, where he excelled in mathematics and astronomy. After graduating from Cambridge, Dee traveled to Europe, where he studied with some of the leading scholars of the day. He returned to England in 1555, and soon became a prominent figure in the court of Queen Elizabeth I.

Dee was a close advisor to the queen, and he played a role in many of the major events of her reign. He was consulted on matters of state, and he helped to negotiate treaties with foreign powers. He also served as the queen's astrologer, and he cast horoscopes for her and her court.

In addition to his work as a courtier, Dee was also a dedicated scholar. He wrote extensively on astrology, alchemy, and the Kabbalah. He also translated many important works from Latin and Greek into English. Dee's work had a profound influence on the development of English esotericism, and it continues to be studied by scholars today.

One of the most important aspects of Dee's work was his belief in the power of angels. He believed that angels could be invoked to help people achieve their goals. He also believed that angels could provide information about the future. Dee's work on angelology was highly influential, and it helped to shape the way that people thought about angels for centuries to come.

Dee's work was not without its critics. Some people accused him of being a heretic and a sorcerer. However, Dee was always able to defend himself against these accusations. He was a devout Christian, and he believed that his work was in accordance with the teachings of the Church.

Dee died in London in 1608. He was 81 years old. He left behind a legacy of scholarship and esoteric knowledge that continues to inspire people today. John Dee was a true pioneer of the occult sciences, and his work has had a profound impact on the development of Western esotericism.
