Gibson was born in Peekskill, New York, on January 3, 1956. He is the sixth of 11 children born to Irish parents, Hutton Gibson, a railway worker, and Anne Patricia (née Reilly),a singer. Directing and Producing:

Gibson's most notable directorial achievement is Braveheart (1995),an epic historical drama that won Gibson an Academy Award for Best Director.

Gibson is a devout Catholic and has been open about his religious beliefs. In 2004, he released The Passion of the Christ, a controversial film about the final hours of Jesus Christ's life. The film sparked debates about religious extremism and anti-Semitism.
