The Siege

The siege of the Alamo began on February 23, 1836, when General Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived with a force of 6,000 Mexican soldiers. The defenders of the Alamo were commanded by Colonel William Barret Travis. They numbered only 189 men, including James Bowie, David Crockett, and William Travis.

Santa Anna demanded that the Texans surrender, but Travis refused. The Mexicans then began a bombardment of the Alamo. The defenders fought back bravely, but they were outnumbered and outgunned.
