Early Life and Education

Sara Plummer Lemmon was born on September 14, 1836, in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Reverend Augustus Plummer, a minister, and his wife, Sarah. Sara showed an early interest in both science and art, and she received her formal education at the Lynn English High School.

After graduating from high school, Sara attended the Massachusetts Normal Art School in Boston. She studied drawing, painting, and sculpture, and she quickly became one of the school's top students. In 1860, she graduated with honors and was awarded a teaching certificate.

Career as a Botanist

After graduating from art school, Sara Plummer Lemmon began teaching art at the Lynn English High School. However, she soon realized that her true passion lay in botany. In 1869, she enrolled in the Harvard University Summer School of Botany, and she quickly excelled in her studies.

In 1871, Sara Plummer Lemmon married John Gill Lemmon, a fellow botanist. The couple moved to California in 1876, and they soon began exploring the state's rich and diverse flora. Sara collected and identified thousands of plant specimens, and she made detailed drawings of many of them.

In 1892, Sara Plummer Lemmon published her first book, "The Ferns of the Pacific Coast." This book was a comprehensive guide to the ferns of California, and it quickly became a standard reference work for botanists. Sara Plummer Lemmon's botanical work was groundbreaking in many ways.
