The novel begins with Roland and his ka-tet, which now includes Susan Delgado, Oy the billy-bumbler, and Jake Chambers, traveling through the Mohaine Desert. They are searching for the lost city of Lud, which is said to be the key to reaching the Dark Tower. However, their journey is soon interrupted by a group of mutants who attack them. Roland and his ka-tet are forced to fight for their lives, and they eventually defeat the mutants. However, they are all injured in the battle, and they must rest before they can continue their journey.

After they have rested, Roland and his ka-tet continue their journey to Lud. They eventually reach the city, but they find that it is in ruins. The city has been destroyed by the Crimson King, and the only survivors are a group of children. Roland and his ka-tet are devastated by the destruction of Lud, but they know that they must continue their journey. They leave the city and head towards the Dark Tower.

As they travel, Roland and his ka-tet are constantly attacked by the forces of the Crimson King. They must fight their way through hordes of monsters and demons, and they must also face the challenges of the treacherous landscape. However, they are determined to reach the Dark Tower, and they will not give up. They know that the fate of the world depends on their success.
